In 2015 we partnered with some inspirational people in Johannesburg, to help in fundraising for two lovely community schools in an informal settlement (Thembisa Township) in a rural area north of Johannesburg, Orient Hills Daycare and Kromdraai School.

Orient Hills Day Care

We employ 5 teachers at Orient Hills and approximately 60 children attend the preschool on a daily basis. With the funds raised we have been able to ensure that there is a sufficient supply of stationery, daily medical supplies and food for the children and teachers.  In the last year Discovery Health has been very involved in the creche. They have come to clean the creche, paint the jungle gyms and tyres and in December 2015 they did a medical health check up on all the children in conjunction with the local clinic. This was a huge success.  We were also able to fix the stairs at the front of the school, which was a huge risk to the children. We also experienced theft during the year and had to replace the large gas bottle.  One of the children, Mapaseka, has a tumour on her eye. We have sought medical help and through the generosity of the doctor and the money raised from last year’s tea, we will be able to help Mapaseka have this growth removed.

Jennifer visited this amazingly friendly pre-school in March 2016, please see below.
Jen's feedback: ''The children are so friendly and hugs were the order of the day! We had a little Easter egg hunt and we sang songs and told the children about Jesus dying for us on the cross. Gladys, one of the smiling teachers, translated. English as a learning subject is not on their curriculum yet but she is hoping to put it on soon. We shared best practice and how we ensure we cater for the needs of the children in our care. We shared our vision and we shared hugs. Plenty of hugs.''

Kromdraai School
In the last 18 months, we have developed a very good relationship with the staff of Emthonjeni, a non-profit organisation who works closely with Mosaiek Church. Mosaiek has purchased land specifically for the new school and future community centre. The ownership of this land went through in January. The Cradle of Humankind has approved the school and community centre, however we are awaiting the final go ahead for the plans. In the meantime, through generous donations from KPMG, Emthonjeni, individuals and funds raised from the High Tea last year, we have been able to purchase a new classroom (takes 20 children), a fully fitted kitchen and a fully fitted ablution. The total raised so far is approximately R420,000.00. This has been far beyond our wildest dreams and expectations for this project! Please see below a collage of the containers that have been delivered.

Jennifer visited this nursery in March 2016, please see below.
Jen's feedback: ''I was taken aback by the dismal conditions by which they go about their day - their kitchen has burnt down twice, they have a wood cabin and some grass turf that has been donated to them, Tembi's ageing mum washes the children's clothing and other family members help to ensure the children are happy and safe. They do not have running water and much in the way of facilities, but what they do have in bucket loads is love, smiles and appreciation. It takes visits like this to be grateful. Truly so. I then visited the new site where the two containers are set up - the older children moved here in April, and the younger children will remain with Tembi. The older children have toilets, a kitchen and a classroom.''

What are we raising funds for in 2016?

Orient Hills Day Care

To continue funding the everyday costs and needs of running Orient Hills Day Care, and any ad hoc funding requirements that may arise throughout the year that the school may not be able to normally afford to fix or maintain.

Kromdraai School
There are a number of things which we still need in order to get the school up and running. Palisade fencingSewerage pipesWater needs to be run from the main building up to the site where the school will be situated; Shade cloth for the children to sit under; A desk for the teacher; Grass for the children to be able to play on; and eventually we will need to purchase a second classroom, as the number of the children in the area is huge

What did we raise in 2015?

On 1 August the fundraising team in Johannesburg held a wonderful Afternoon Tea!  On 8 August 2015 in London Jenniflowers Pre-School Nursery had a fun day and did some fundraising at our Summer Picnic in the Park with a raffle, with gifts kindly donated by our parents/local business, and other items e.g: delicious cakes baked by Jenniflowers staff and parents. We raised £420 towards this worthy cause, thank you everybody! I don't think we can fully imagine the huge help your generosity will provide to these children and families in rural South Africa. Please keep an eye on our African Communities Project page to see how Project Orient and Kromdraai School develops further.

A big thank you to the following businesses for their kind donations/prizes >
